Crawling: To find information on the hundreds of millions of web pages that exist, a search engine employs particular software robots, called spiders, to make lists of the words found on web sites. Crawling is the method of fetching all the web pages linked to a website. This task is performed by software, called crawler or a spider.

Meta Tags: Meta tags allow the owner of a page to specify keywords and concepts under which the page will be indexed. This can be helpful, particularly in cases in which the words on the the page might have double or triple meanings - the Meta tags can guide the the search engine in deciding which of the several possible meanings of these words are correct.

Indexing: There are two key components involved in making the gathered data accessible to the user;

  • The information stored with the data
  • The technique by which the information is indexed.

Indexing is the process of creating an index for all the fetched web pages and keeping them into a massive database from where it can later be retrieved. In actual fact, the process of indexing is identifying the words and expressions that best explain the page and conveying the page to particular keywords.

Processing: When a search request approach, the search engine processes it. i.e. it balances the search string in the search request with the indexed pages in the database.

Calculating Relevancy: Since it is probable that more than one the page contains the search string, so the search engine starts calculating the relevancy of each of the pages in its index to the search string.

Retrieving Results: The last step in search engines’ activities are retrieving the best-matched results. Mostly, it is nothing more than simply showing them in the browser.
